Post-merger Team-building - NHS Direct

Clinical software supplier InferMed Ltd won a multi-million pound contract to design, build and operate a hi-tech new website for NHS Direct, with content maintained by NHSD staff, replacing an in-house developed solution.

The timescale for delivery was 6 months, half the time originally scheduled. This demanded tight focus on timeliness, with substantial management challenges; the team were spread geographically, there were cultural differences, and commercial relationships were complex. From the start, it was clear that technology was not the issue – lots of technical expertise was available; delivering quality in a very short time was the challenge.

InferMed asked Andrew Wright to lead the project.

Delivery is really about people – in this case we had to form a single team across all stakeholder groups and locations then motivate people to deliver as effectively as possible i.e. be self-motivated.

Our delighted clients collect their eGovernment award for the NHS Direct website and its on-line symptom checkers.

The culture and behaviours established in the project are benefiting both InferMed and NHS Direct. The NHS Direct web service (nhsdirect.nhs.uk) has since been made available on mobile phones and new symptom checkers are being delivered weekly, saving the NHS real money every day!
